Whitby & The Surrounding Area

Whitby is the quintessential fishing village, where red tiled rooftops tumble down the steep sides of the Esk estuary to the pretty harbour below. Still a place of work, fishing boats pepper the harbour, a flotilla of various colours and hues waiting to spill their hauls onto the quayside. Whitby has escaped the mainstream on account of its unique and secluded geography, squeezed as it is between the sea and the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors. As a result, this unspoilt town has guarded its identity like few others.

Explore Whitby and you’ll become immersed in a maze of narrow cobbled streets, winding alleyways, stone steps and intriguing passageways. Traders compete with the cries of seagulls to shout their prices in the open-air market and gourmet food stores jostle with art and crafts shops selling original works of refreshing quality.

The clarity of light and unique architecture has always ensured that Whitby is a magnet for artists. Indeed, the town boasts several fine art galleries. Don’t miss the collection of works from the celebrated ‘Staithes Group’ in the Pannett Gallery.

Wandering along streets with evocative names such as Flowergate and Arguments Yard, you will be struck by one of Whitby’s great paradoxes: although the town is insulated from much of Britain, it displays influences from the four corners of the world - a reminder of its great maritime past.

As you're about to discover, the Whitby area has plenty to offer all ages and is a wonderful location for a family get-together throughout the year.  Whitby provides the perfect mix of entertainment, great restaurants, unique architecture, awe-inspiring scenery, weather and landmarks to make any stay memorable.

For food lovers, Whitby and its environs combine some of the area’s best restaurants and gastro-pubs, as well as being home to some of the best Fish & Chips in the country. Whether it’s Greens of Whitby, the Fox & Hounds at Goldsborough or the famous Magpie Café, you are sure to find satisfaction.

For those seeking a seaside holiday, Ruswarp is ideally located just a mile by foot from the hustle and bustle of Whitby and 5 minutes drive from the wonderful beach and scenery of Sandsend. Other nearby beaches include the picturesque Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. There are also plenty of characterful fishing villages nearby to visit, each with its own gift shops, cafes and pubs.

For walkers, the cottage has many walks that can be taken from the front door. It is also close to the Cleveland Way, the Coast to Coast walk and of course numerous walks in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

For explorers, a short drive or steam train ride will transport you to the very heart of Heartbeat country in the North York Moors, with its many wonderful pubs, walks, attractions and trips down memory lane. Likewise the awe-inspiring, natural amphitheatre of the Hole of Horcum is just 15 minutes away, whilst the pretty market town of Pickering lies just beyond, a 30 minute drive inland.

For thrill seekers Flamingo Land is just 30 minutes away combining a theme park and zoo, ideal for children.
